The sylphs and ondines And the sea-kings and queens Long ago, long ago, on the waves built a city, As lovely as seems To some bard in his dreams, The soul of his latest love-ditty -Edward Robert Bulwer Lytton
All the sights are here: gondolas, domes, mists... and poetic bridges of every shape and size. There are earthy architectural fragments but also poignant Commedia Dell Arte figures and shiny masks. The artists selected approach their subject matter through a variety of different media to which, in addition to the traditional media of oils, acrylics & watercolours, may be added tempera and pastel, fresco on ceramic, black & white photography and more unusual digital C print conversions by Eric Uhlfelder. His piece "Ca' D' Oro" creating the uncanny sense or memory of a mystical side of Venice, an unusual interpretation of this oft-depicted place; a favourite subject dear to artists from Canaletto onwards.
