Artist of the week
John Swarbrick

Swarbrick's application of line and form reflect the paintings sense of rhythmic improvisation and unorthodox instrumentation. A sense that most people understand by spending time enveloped in a contemporary jazz sound. His compositions rely on his intuitive sense of timing, spontaneity and freshness of each performance. Energetic linear marks dart across the surface of the canvas tangling your eye in a net of interconnecting clusters creating three dimensional space.

In order to remain innovative and focused Swarbrick initially relies upon a formal structure, heightening his creative processes. The initial base and process on which to create remains the 'constant', reinforcing the responsive and organic qualities of 'line' when exposed to varying intensities of colour, light and rhythm.

His prepared backgrounds relish the exchange of conversation, guiding the overlying marks smoothly across the surface. Giving the viewer a sense of empirical discovery not dissimilar to working diagrams or diagrammatic instructions. Swarbricks excitable 'molecular' structures express a sense of joy in their fluidity adventure and dialogue with each other.
