Charles Willmott is a figurative painter with over forty years of painting experience and a passion for performance and dance.
Before Charles begins a painting, he produces a series of preliminary sketches. Drawing directly from life helps him to visually note the movement and body language of the model and capture the atmosphere and feeling of the environment. At this stage of the process, Charles can develop the positioning, balance, and harmony, reworking the composition in pencil and charcoal, until he is happy with the whole. Acting as reminders, these important initial sketches and studies, as well as being beautiful pieces in their own right, become a visual shorthand for his paintings. His ability to reflect a sentiment through a momentary embrace, a fleeting glance, or an intimate moment, is largely due to his skill as a draughtsman.
Working back at his studio Charles then begins to translate his sketches on to the canvas. By using his drawings combined with his memory and feelings for the occasion, he is able to retain the immediacy and fluidity of the sketches, while giving his paintings a real sense of substance and life. His use of colour and light beautifully compliment his tender and sensitive approach to both his subject matter and his chosen medium. With over forty years of painting experience and knowledge, Charles Willmott eloquently reflects his love of narrative and romance through these wonderful visual explorations of movement and dance.
This ability to capture movement and form on a two-dimensional picture plane and his love for theatre and classical dance has lead to numerous collaborations with prestigious British Theatres and Ballet companies. Charles has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Royal Ballet, covering a number of productions including, Tim Albery's Macbeth and Michael Attenborough's direction of The Herbal Bed. He has also worked extensively with principal dancers such as Miyako Yoshida and Darcey Bussell.
During 1991 his first one-man show was staged at London's Mall Galleries and he has subsequently exhibited throughout Britain. In the year 2000 this dedication to the stage and performance achieved him a finalist place in the prestigious Garrick/Milne Prize and today Charles's work disciplines are divided fairly equally between Portraiture, Female Form and dance.
Charles Willmott is a British born artist living and working in Hereford, England.
