Artist of the week
Victor Agius

There are many forms of artistic discipline, yet sculpture, abstract, figurative and portrait paintings are just different ways of expressing the same artistic impulse. Occasionally we have the pleasure of exhibiting an artist who has successfully mastered many different artistic mediums and uses them all to create meaningful work. Victor Agius creates silkily beautiful sculptures, fabulous mixed media works as well as glowing abstracts and expressive landscapes. In a lesser artist this could prove a downfall; they are possibly trying too many areas. Agius succeeds because in each discipline his work resonates with a skill and a masterful skill that means his work can compare with anyone working in the same field. If the mark of a true artist lies in their ability to work outside of their strongest field, then here we see nothing but strength in all areas.

The ceramic sculptures, glazed to perfection, contain a graceful motion and wonderful symmetry that brings to mind the rhythms of dance. In other pieces the family unit is shown with an abstract handling of form which still manages to capture the solidarity and commitment of the people involved. Other sculptures move completely into the world of the abstract and seek to express the intangible emotion of religious ideas. His abstractions swirl and explode with a multitude of colours. A rainbow spectrum of light is captured with an artistic flare
