Colour, illusion and complexity are Sarah Simpson's immediate obsessions.
Playing out a battle with paint results in a labyrinth of marks, some ugly; some beautiful, the colour and form working together to form a dialogue.
As the paintings evolve the marks continually change status. As more layers are applied they begin to interact with one another, creating illusions of space. The form and colours, and their individual worth, remaining unchallenged until a conclusion is reached - a stage which can never be predicted. At a point somewhere close to chaos, Simpson becomes aware that the composition is forming a whole and makes the decision to stop painting. This process of instinctive and destructive painting helps her to create paintings of intense beauty. Her beautiful images emerge from the pure act of painting. By allowing the painting to intuitively evolve, Simpson's serendipitous colour and form pinpoint her own artistic journey of enlightenment and discovery.
Sarah Simpson's latest series of abstract works are as complex, yet simultaneously as simple as the sublime beauty found in nature.
