My work begins with drawing and is driven by a love of the moments when an image can emerge on the paper without any apparent conscious thought – a Zen-like moment when there seems to be no distinction between the artist and the object of his creation.
My aim as a painter is to attempt to achieve in a painting similar qualities to those which are found in drawing – a feeling that the form emerges as a barely conscious dialogue between the marks on the surface and the artist. In order to achieve this, I use a variety of media applied with brushes, rags and fingers to allow a wide range of marks and gestures.
The study of the human figure is one of the principal themes which has run consistently through my work.
