GERRY HALPIN MBE MAFA CONTEMPORARY ART
Although my paintings are abstract, their source is clearly rooted in the familiarity of landscape.
I draw what I see but not literally. Simplicity of form comes from being focused on the essential features of the landscape and their relationship to each other.
At the moment I am especially interested in the configuration of land and sea and the effect of the one on the other. The erosion of cliffs and the crashing of waves, the filling up and the drying out of estuaries, mudflats cut by river channels and etched by the tides the whole thing bathed in the dramatic and often magical colour of light.
My perspective however is not that of being IN the landscape but rather of being ABOVE it. My drawings, which are quickly done from the seat of a light aircraft or from a holidaying flight, record the essentials of what is seen and are not overburdened with detail. They are shorthand notations of meandering lines and the patterns of masses, abutted or divided physical features and hints of the earths’ texture, much reduced at this height.
Because most of us have flown at some time, there is a feeling of recognition in
my abstract landscapes and they contain much that is familiar to us and with which we can relate.
My chosen media of acrylic paint, polymer paste and gold or silver leaf are perfect materials for me to re-present that linear landscape on paper or canvas..
My paintings are very suitable for site specific situations where colour and size are an important consideration and I readily accept commissions for both commercial and domestic placing.
In 2001 I was elected a member of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts and elected to its Council in 2004
In 2009 I was appointed MBE in the New Year Honours List for services to Art and Charities
