Cecelia is a Zimbabwean artist who has been producing paintings for exhibition and private commission for the last fourteen years.
She works with acrylics and oils, in two very different styles.
The Southern African theme of totemic culture influences the one body of works. A collage of images sourced from memory, books and photographs are exaggerated and manipulated onto the canvas. The resultant shapes are then blocked in with strong colour, resulting in bold, brightly coloured, design-oriented canvases.
Surrealist mindscapes explore three-dimensional representation in her other range of paintings. Emphasis in composition is on creating depth, distance, fullness and weightlessness which together with the use of rich, bright colour, result in works which despite their brightness, have an uncomfortable brooding, edginess to them. There is no conscious symbolism or explicit meaning intended in the finished paintings, and rather than influence the viewer’s opinion by explaining her own motivation for a particular piece, she prefers them to attach their own meaning and significance, or simply to enjoy the image for its own sake.
Cecelia is also involved in community artwork projects at a children’s activity centre in the Yorkshire Dales. This involves designing and coordinating mural and canvas artwork, as well as tabletop art and craft projects, for groups of 8–12 year olds from local schools attending school holiday Play Schemes.
