Jane Haviland

Jane Haviland's art is based on the female figure, usually a model in her own studio, but also embraces portraits, landscapes, flowers and still lifes. While her earlier work was almost exclusively in oils, the female form in pastel has been her interest of late. Jane studied with Tom Coates and latterly Victor Ambrus. Her work has been exhibited regularly at the Mall Galleries (FBA), in particular the Pastel Society, the Royal Insititue of Oil Painters, the New English Art Club and the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers. Jane has sold work through the Llewellyn Alexander gallery in London and had a joint exhibition at the Farnham Maltings. Jane has twice won prizes at open competitions held by "The Artist" magazine. Of one her prize-winning entries the artist Ken Howard (RA) wrote: "The design of this pastel is very good. The figure and the cat forming an harmonious whole. The work is very direct and strong, well-observed drawing with a lovely sense of rhythm and movement. The colour is well-considered, with the play of complementaries beautifully controlled." (The Artist. January 2000)
