| Bronwen Malcolm is a talented draughtswoman with an eye for the grotesque. Conversant across a variety of traditional media formats, the works she shows here utilise pencil on paper, watercolour and oil on canvas and board. Reminiscent of Max Beckmann, George Grosz and Paula Rego, her work is at times darkly satirical, at others comic and colourful. A masked, nude woman waltzes with a ram in a way which is not predictably sexual but instead she wears a resigned expression on her face as if this is quite usual. A tea party of monochromatic collaged figures include participants made up of Hitler and a transexual Punk being fed by a squatting active baby on the tabletop. Not for the faint-hearted, these are confident works which will keep you looking and imagining for a long time afterwards. |
