John Talbot  cv
Sometimes, one happens across paintings to which the first response just has to be: "Wow that's clever!" This is one of those instances. Talbot's acrylic entanglements appear to be intricate cutouts, fabricated from flimsy card or humble corrugated cardboard. Referencing Japanese paper art or shadow puppetry, these contemporary trompe l'oeil filigrees are not without painted irony. Is it a coincidence that one painting is entitled "Philly"?! They satisfy on a conceptual level too as the dynamic diagonals of "Le Grande Escape" cannot free themselves from the confines of the painted edge; whilst even the fictional name "Torokolo" evokes Tokyo metro lines, circling round forever.
