Artist Stuart Murray, the son of a miner, has a fascinating life story and it illuminates the secret narratives of his acrylics, wringing out every drop of pathos, moulded into pent - up textures. He follows in the great Modernist tradition of the Flaneur: the male whose Muse, Woman, is forever incomprehensible and a source of wonder. "Utopion" seems to epitomise woman seen as a strange hybrid creature of inifinite pleasure and possibilities, whilst possessing a deadly sting in the tail (tale). "That Split Second of Division" could be seen as representing the moment where the mask falls, where the other is not what they seem and love dies, resulting in separation. |
