Linda Griffin

Obviously a past master with watercolours, Linda Griffin uses this subtle medium to great effect across various artistic genres such as seacape, portrait and landscape. Her portrait of Bob Geldof is as creative as it is well observed and it is no surprise that her work is widely collected and that she has completed many successful commissions, especially in portraiture. With Linda's work there are three important attributes to be considered: firstly, no mark is out of place, secondly there is a sense that each painting is totally complete in itself and finally her art successfully captures that inimitable Cornish light.

Geoff Gunby

GEOFF GUNBY Surprisingly, Geoff Gunby has never formally trained, not having been forced into a 'style' as such, he has instead evolved several ways of looking at the world in paint: thick impasto on board using pallet knife, brush and scraper, brushed out paintings on board and canvas and realist paintings on canvas. His adept use of all these materials has been developed through studied experimentation and exploration, his work is both prolific and diverse but united by a determination to say something new about his subjects, which include portraits, landscapes and city street scenes. He produced a large set of swiftly executed paintings entitled 'When Farmer Oak Smiled', of all the members and staff at Studio Upstairs, a facility aimed primarily at survivors of the psychiatric system, where he took up a year’s residency. He sites his influences as the school of London artists, Kossoff, Auerbach, Freud, and the American photo-realists.

Gerry Halpin MBE MAFA

'After a recent visit to Cuba, I became interested in painting groups of people and the way in which they related both together and within their environment. Whilst in the public Art Gallery in Havana, which is a wonderfully spacious building, I began to draw figures as they moved within the space and was intrigued by the way in which the forms shifted within the groups and how the interplay of light and dark on the walls at one point absorbed the figure and then threw it into relief. Neither the figure nor the place was important to the drawing in terms of their identity, and in fact the speed drawing exagerated the anonymity of the people. What became important, and the point of developing the work into paintings on my return to the studio, was the balanced abstraction of the spatial relationships which were created within an equally abstract space.
