Kristin Erken

Kristin mostly paints on natural materials such as slate and plywood. The rough finish, edges and warp of some of the pieces that she finds, form an integral part of the work. "These paintings try to explore the past 'experience' or 'memory' of the materials I paint on in creating a new window or landscape using their natural forms and textures" says the artist. The natural wood and rock surfaces merge with painterly spaces and the forms of plants, insects, the human body, water, rock and other organic life. The works blur the lines or boundaries between different forms of life, mixing them in a visual soup of line and texture. Objects blend into one another as part of a bigger pattern.

Rhonda  Fenwick

This series of works, 'Love The Skin Your In', is a direct response to the universal feelings of 'not being loved or accepted'. As a past Artist in Residence, in the Dermatology Department at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, the question of what defines perfection and beauty is one which fascinates Rhonda Fenwick… "Especially if a person looks different and doesn't fit into the accepted "norms" of society. The direct result of these experiences can often lead to isolation and people feeling rejected." Rhonda Fenwick gained a Millennium Award for her work within the department and is currently developing work around skin, skin disease and body image with three other artists in partnership within the hospital. The work will culminate in an exhibition at the Hancock Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne in November 2005.

Haroulla Filakti

There is a huge difference between Abstraction and pure Abstract. Here we see Haroulla Failakti creating imagery through the route of Abstraction. Processing traditional photography through the computer, he juxtaposes ‘real’ images with that of computer manipulation and regeneration, merging the two until he finds a balance in scale, form, and colour. Combining Abstracted form with recognisable and real forms found in nature results in these beautiful and striking large-scale works.

Cristina Ghelfi

Christina Ghelfi currently lives and works in Modena, Italy. Her figurative paintings create a powerful sense of narrative by the placement and arrangement of figures within an environment. Essentially using a geometric structure, Cristina's descriptive brush work is reduced to the bare minimum, forcing us to rely on their suggestive qualities to decipher a narrative or mood - their clothes, and hair styles, the way they hold themselves, their body language - within a specific environment. Cristina Ghelfi has exhibited her work across Italy.

Thomas H Green

Thomas H green uses a combination of traditional and contemporary techniques to create his work. Predominantly a figurative artist Green studies the human form - initially in a traditional life room setting. His pastel and charcoal on paper works reflect this intense study and become an important part of the process. His ability to create the more complex and innovative mixed media works stems in essence from this fundamental grounding. His elegant ink on paper works move away from the life room setting and by their nature focus purely on form, style and material, rather than the setting or environment of the model. Using digital and computer software, works such as, Nude W23 highlight his ability to generate a work of art which has a less referential base and takes on a life of its own. Thomas H Green currently lives and works in London.
