James D Preston lives in Derbyshire one of the most beautiful parts of England. James' oil paintings reflect the beauty and serenity of his surrounding countryside. His talent for capturing a specific atmosphere is partly created by his skilful observation and depiction of light and shadow. This not only translates his sentiment as the artist but also allows us, as the viewer to be momentarily transported right in to the heart of the landscape.
James paints directly from the countryside. Most location landscape painters are happy to rework and complete a painting once they are back in their studio, but James prefers to return to the landscape until he has completed the work in its entirety.
This sort of dedication demands careful preparation and planning. Walking through the countryside of his choice, it could take him hours to find the perfect view of the landscape. He travels with all his location kit, including not only his paint, canvas, sketching materials and additional mediums etc but also the necessary painting equipment to make it possible for him to spend time painting in situ.
This is not an easy task in it's self if we are to consider that some of his works measure over a metre. Once he has found his position James may spend hours, days and weeks working on creating one painting, returning again and again to the same spot.
His level of commitment to reflecting the landscape in oil on canvas is in turn reflected in his impressionistic works. With over thirty years of painting experience James knows how to mix colour and paint.
To produce work of this quality, outside and over a period of different sittings, an artist must have the technical ability and foresight to create the desired effect in oil paint. He must be able to mix paint so that it dries quickly in some areas and remains wet and malleable for reworking in others. He must also take into account the climate, atmosphere and ever changing British weather. More importantly he must thoroughly understand his medium in order to make those necessary developmental decisions that will affect the running course of the painting not only for the next day but for the remainder of the painting.
Managing to breathe life in to paint through his passion and talent for it, his comprehensive approach to each work creates a natural and impressionistic texture and sense of history to the paint, a quality which can never be imitated. This talent and skill is apparent throughout all his paintings. The atmosphere he creates not only reflects the tangible aspects of the country side but cleverly captures the indefinable ethereal quality of nature. James Preston produces paintings which reveal the artists own feelings and sensibilities towards a landscape he loves.
