Russian artist Elena Sakharnaya produces exquisite fine art collage pieces which are delicate and well crafted. Here at Londonart, she shows a series comprising decorative plates and Venetian masks from the Commedia dell Arte. Both the plates and the masks have a sumptuous feel, recalling history, mythology and decadence. In that sense they may be thought of as being somewhat influenced by Art Deco; indeed Russia was highly influential in the Art Deco movement as evidenced in the designs of the stage and costume designer Leon Bakst. In this sense, by working on top of the masks themselves, Elena reinscribes this early twentieth century aesthetic to create objet d'art which are quite unique both in themselves and to Londonart. |
